Dorothy Schadegg

October 30, 1909 — November 24, 2012

After living an amazing vibrant 103 years, Dorothy went home to be with the Lord on November 24, 2012, at United Hospital, following a stroke. Unbelievably, she was still driving, attending card club, volunteering and living independently. Dorothy was born in St. Paul to Edward & Antoinette (Mikesh) Murphy, attended St. James Elementary School and Central High School. With her secretarial training she found work during the depth of the Depression and at 22 yrs of age provided the sole income for her widowed mother and 11 yr old sister Arlene. She continued to work as an executive secretary for The Travelers, Smith-Dunn Company, Ford Motor Power and the Kraft-Dart Corp, retiring while still youthful at 75 years of age. In 1952, Dorothy married Joseph F. Schadegg, enjoying over 20 years of happiness with him until his untimely death in 1973. While they had no children, they filled their life with work family celebrations, friendships, square-dancing, card playing, bird hunting and building a lovely cabin on Gull Lake where they hosted many friends and enjoyed fishing and lake activities. At 75, Dorothy followed her heart and began her second career - volunteering at United Hospital St. Paul, recording over 5200 hours and 25 years working in the business office. Over those years, she famously sewed over 1700 Christmas stockings for the newborn holiday babies to go home tucked safely inside. One of the happiest times of her life was celebrating her 100th birthday "Mancini-style" with family and friends and then a second time with the United Hospital community as she was honored for her generous spirit and years of service to others. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe and almost all of her early associates and friends. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Arlene Tauer; one niece, Stephanie Tauer Travis (Stuart), three nephews, John E. Tauer (Nancy), Greg J. Tauer, and Michael M. Tauer; 11 great nieces and nephews; 9 great great nieces and nephews. Dorothy was considered the grand matriarch of families. Every shared meal included her fond, often tearful"And God Bless Family". Mass of Christian Burial Saturday 11am at ST. FRANCIS DE SALES CATHOLIC CHURCH (Palace & Osceola). Visitation Friday 4-8 at KESSLER & MAGUIRE FUNERAL HOME 640 W 7th St. 651-224-2341 and also 1 hr prior to mass. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
