Harry Hansen

February 4, 1924 — May 9, 2016

Harry was born February 4, 1924, in Beaverhead County, Montana, the last of six children of Danish immigrants Ras and Cecilie Hansen, who ranched on Sheep Creek near Dell, Montana. Several years after Harry's birth, the Hansen family moved their ranching operations to Medicine Lodge, near Dillon. Harry met a world of wonderful and varied characters and saw the world change as he grew up on the ranch, tractors and automobiles replacing horses and electricity illuminating the ranch house. After attending a one-room schoolhouse he reached by horse, he graduated from high school in Dillon and attended Dillon Normal College. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Harry graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine from Colorado State in Fort Collins. It was while working at a clinic in Billings, Montana, that he met Jean Barck, a St. Paul native. They were married on August 26, 1954, and eventually set up a veterinary practice in farming community of Amery, Wisconsin, that they maintained for nearly forty years. Harry was a kind and gentle man in a physical profession, a quietly engaging storyteller full of colorful recollections from the ranches in Montana and the farms of Wisconsin. His example of willingness to work, devotion to faith and family, and a life honestly and humbly lived inspired and blessed all who came to know him - especially his family, who miss him dearly but rejoice in his liberation from the limitations of this life and especially in his new and perfect eternal life with his Good Shepherd. Preceded in death by parents Ras and Cecelia; brothers Howard, Leonard, and Art; sister Ethel. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly sixty-two years, Jean; daughter Christine (Leo) and son Tom (Mary); grandchildren Diedrick, Stephanie, Sarah, Dane, and Victoria; numerous nieces and nephews. Gathering 4-6 PM Wednesday (5/18) and 10-11 AM Thursday (5/19) with 11 AM Memorial Service Thursday at Saint James Lutheran Church, Annapolis & Cherokee, West. St. Paul. Inurnment Union Cemetery. Memorials to Saint James Lutheran Church, St. Croix Lutheran High School or Donors Choice.
