Dr. Brooks Butler was a dedicated and compassionate healer who passed away peacefully at home on May 22, 2025, at the age of 86 due to kidney disease.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Grace Butler; his brother, David (Barbara); and his niece, Jill Butler.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Sandi (née Evavold); his sons, Scott (Laura), Chad Michael (Susanna), John Earl (Marie), and Lance; his daughter, Jennifer; and his stepdaughter, Lisa. He was a proud grandfather to Meredith, Natalie, Ethan, Gavin, Alston, Inman, Rowan, and 'Lil' Brooks. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and his cherished lifelong friends from Robbinsdale.
Dr. Butler began his medical education at the University of Minnesota and went on to receive numerous honors, including being named a standing intern at UCLA Medical Center. Before beginning his surgical residency, he served for 2 years in the U.S. Public Health Service in Arizona. During his residency, he worked on the first transplant unit and was greatly respected for his role as a mentor to new surgical residents.
After completing his residency in 1972, he joined the Physicians Clinic in Saint Paul under the mentorship of Dr. John Earl, practicing at both Midway and Mound Park Hospitals. The clinic later became part of HealthPartners.
Dr. Butler was a member of the American College of Surgeons, Minnesota Surgical Society, and Ramsey County Medical Society. Over a career spanning 40 years, he was recognized as an accomplished general surgeon, admired for his expertise, compassion, and mentorship.
A lifelong learner, he was an avid reader with a particular interest in science and history, always eager to explore new ideas. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence in medicine, unwavering dedication to his patients, and deep commitment to education and research.
Brooks was a humble man of strong faith and an active member of his church. He dearly loved his family and his two dogs, Lollipop and Jacky.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church (104 S. Snelling Ave., St. Paul, MN 55105), with a visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Donations in his memory may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
An additional service and interment will be held at Grue Lutheran Church (306 Larson Avenue, Ashby, MN 56309) on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM. Memorial donations may be directed to Grue Lutheran Church.
