Jane F. Campbell (Hertel)

August 16, 1943 — May 17, 2023

Jane Frances (Hertel) Campbell, 79, St. Paul, entered eternal rest on May 17, 2023, after three months of battling cancer. Born on August 16, 1943, she was the fourth child of Leo and Genevieve (Miller) Hertel. Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Bruce David Campbell, (d. 8/17/1995), after twenty-four years of marriage (7/19/1971). She is also preceded in death by her eldest brother, baby Paul Hertel, John (Jack) Hertel, and younger siblings, James (Jim) Hertel, and Rosanne (Rosie) Hertel.

Jane is survived by her children, Gordon Blair Campbell, St. Paul, and Rebecca (Becca) Clarice Campbell, wife of David Lau, Mound. Surviving are siblings, Mary Jo (Hertel) Smuda, Jerome (Jerry) Hertel and his wife, Toni, Carol (Hertel) Kluk and her husband, Don, Frances (Hertel) Tieman and her husband, Doug, and sister-in-law, Kathy (Campbell) Hertel. Jane is also survived by 20 nieces and nephews, 42 great-nieces and nephews and eight great-great nieces and nephews.

Jane was raised in Winsted, MN by parents who strongly valued Catholic education. She attended Holy Trinity Grade and High Schools, graduating in 1961. She continued her education at the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN graduating in 1965 with a BA in Social Work and a minor in Speech & Drama. While in high school and especially in college, Jane was active in numerous theater productions both at St. Ben's and St. John's University.

After graduating from college, Jane was employed over a seven-year period (1965 - 1972) by St. Cloud Children's Home, the Sherburn County Welfare Dept., and the Ramsey County Welfare Dept., assisting at-risk children and adults. After being a stay-at-home mother for eight years, Jane returned to the work force in 1980 as a social worker for Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Paul, assisting elderly long-term residents and their families for the duration of her thirty years of employment, retiring in 2010.

Jane was a member of the Church of The Holy Trinity, St. Paul, from 1971 - 2005, and Church of St. Stanislaus, St. Paul, from 2005 - 2023. At both churches she was a lector and Eucharistic minister. She was also an active member of St. Stanislaus' Women's Spirituality Group, where she made many close friends and valued her group of "spirituality sisters", especially Lindsey, Jackie, Carol, and Patty. The spiritual guidance of Fr. John Clay (d. 2020) brought Jane to an even closer relationship with Jesus.

Jane's strength during the months she battled her illness lay in her unwavering faith in her Lord, Jesus Christ, and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was beloved by all who knew her, and she appreciated the many visits and calls she received from family and friends while she was in transitional care and hospice. Jane cared about and continued to maintain close ties with her Wisconsin cousins, especially Christian Br. James Miller, (martyred in Guatemala, 1982), Bob Miller, and numerous Cherney cousins. Jane and her family are especially thankful for the care and attention she received from Bob and his daughter, Jeanne McGlone, who was a patient advocate on Jane's behalf, and helped her in every way possible.
