Juli Prokop Knutson passed away suddenly on June 8, 2025, just a few short months after retiring from her longtime role at Dakota County. She was 65.
Juli was born on January 14, 1960, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Thomas Prokop and Charlene (Pourrier) Jerue. She spent her life in the Twin Cities area, raising her children, building a career, and nurturing her many creative passions.
She is survived by her daughter Kate Russell (Matt) of New Brighton, her son Jack Knutson of Minneapolis, and her beloved grandson Ellis Russell, with whom she shared a special bond. She is also survived by her mother, Charlene Jerue; her siblings Mark Prokop (Jacki), Thomas Prokop, and Geri Bast (Rick); as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Juli was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Prokop; her former spouse, John Knutson; her nephews Chris Prokop and Charlie Knutson; and her niece Ashley (Prokop) McCall.
A vibrant, tenacious, and deeply creative person, Juli brought color and personality to everything she touched. She had a sharp eye for design, a love for all things miniature, and a knack for uncovering treasures at garage sales and thrift stores. Her cooking was legendary to those who knew her—she always had something delicious to share. She was funny, brave, compassionate, and incredibly strong, facing life’s challenges with grace and grit.
In the weeks following her retirement, Juli embraced her newfound freedom with joy and curiosity—spending time with friends and family, attending protests, cooking, sleeping in, and most importantly, making memories with Ellis.
Her death was premature and unexpected. We wanted more time with her. She deserved more time with us.
In honor of Juli’s memory, donations can be made to Friends of the Mississippi River or Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library. A small, private gathering will be held to celebrate her life.
