Maia Mahowald, born in 1978 in Minneapolis to Tom and Chris Mahowald, died tragically and unexpectedly on December 15, 2025. She was 47 years old.
Maia was a shining light—a creative swirl, a compassionate friend, and a soul loved beyond words. She will be deeply missed for her radiant smile, boundless energy, and strong sense of fairness. Her open-minded, welcoming spirit made all who knew her feel seen and loved.
Maia spent her grade school years at Seward Elementary, attended Sanford Middle School, and graduated from Loring Nicollet High School. She maintained and cherished many of the friendships she formed during those years throughout her life.
Her unexpected passing has come as a profound shock to her family, friends, and loved ones, who are still reeling from this devastating loss. Maia embraced a vibrant life and still had so much ahead of her. She left us far too soon, but she will live forever in our hearts.
Maia was preceded in death by her father, Tom Mahowald. She is survived by her mother, Chris Mahowald; her beloved son, Sage Herringshaw; and Sage’s grandfather, Mike Griffith. Sage, Chris, Mike and all of Maia’s family and friends are devastated by the loss of Maia’s beautiful soul.
