Raymond Robert Skarda, known affectionately as Ray, passed away on August 1, 2024, in Brainerd, MN, at the age of 77. Born on March 20, 1947, in St. Paul, MN, Ray lived a life marked by generosity, laughter, and an enduring love for the outdoors.
After graduating from Cretin High School, Ray honorably served in the Army from 1966 to 1972, dedicating six years to his country during a pivotal time in history. Following his military service, he embarked on a diverse career path. He was the proud owner and operator of Phil's Place Restaurant and later retired from the Ford Motor Company, where he was respected by all his colleagues for his work ethic and camaraderie.
Ray was an avid outdoorsman, spending countless hours fishing, hunting, and bird watching. He was also a master storyteller, often regaling his family and friends with tales of his adventures. His love for playing card games, cooking delicious meals, and solving puzzles made him the heart of every gathering.
He is survived by his beloved girlfriend, Debbie DeGross; children, Robert (Katie), Jeffrey Sr (Jennifer), Shauna (Jeremy), and Shari; grandchildren, Stella, Reagan, Claire, Jeffrey Jr (Tiffany), Taylor (Junior), Cameron, Tristin, Justin, and Nikolas; great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Joy, Javier, J'Angelllo, and Mylah. He also leaves behind his siblings, Darlene (Barry) Goldman, Philip (Skip) Skarda, and Patty Melco. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Arline Skarda, and his brother, Jack Skarda.
A service will be held at Kessler & Maguire Funeral Home (640 West 7th St., St. Paul, MN 55102) on August 16th at 5PM with a visitation an hour before and after. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, honoring Ray's passion for the natural world.
Ray's legacy of love, laughter, and storytelling will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
