Rodney "Hot Rod" James Volkers

October 18, 1967 — October 11, 2025

Rodney James Volkers, lovingly known as “Hot Rod,” passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025. Born on October 18, 1967, Rod grew up on Keller Golf Course in Maplewood, Minnesota, and attended North St. Paul High School. He later went on to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he proudly played both hockey and baseball.

Rod is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Ranee; his son, Carson; and his daughter, Ellie. He is also survived by his parents, Ray and Clara, and his brothers, Greg (Beth) and Todd (Chris).

Rod’s passion for hockey and baseball started early. As the youngest of three boys, he was always chasing after his older brothers playing boot hockey in the street or backyard baseball that resulted in so many broken windows, his parents eventually boarded them up rather than replace them.

A gifted athlete, Rod played amateur baseball for many years with the Roosters. As a pitcher, his signature “Tumbler” pitch left batters scratching their heads, and at the plate, he always seemed to come through when it mattered most. He also enjoyed Saturday rounds of golf with the Oak Marsh Men’s Club and winter bowling with friends.

Coaching was one of Rod’s greatest joys. Whether it was baseball or hockey, he poured his heart into mentoring young athletes. He especially treasured the special “chalk talks” shared with his daughter, Ellie.

Rod was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He will be profoundly missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 1st from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at Oak Marsh Golf Course.
