William Muldoon

October 23, 1943 — September 6, 2022

Saint Paul, Minnesota

At his home on Summit Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota. Beloved by his family, Bill was the eighth of ten children of Margery Teresa (Lynch) and Arthur Aloysius Muldoon of Roslindale, Massachusetts. Bill was the first of the family to earn an advanced degree and the first to earn a doctorate. Bill served in the US Navy from 1965 to 1970. Most of his time was spent in Beaufort, SC as a pharmacist’s mate, acting at a young age as a primary health care provider for hundreds of service men. He graduated from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy (1974) and the University of Minnesota (1980), where he earned a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry.

As a faculty member in the chemistry department of the College of St. Benedict & St. John’s University in Minnesota, Bill taught and inspired many students, including future physicians who will forever remember his organic chemistry classes. Bill had very high standards and expected his students to meet them.  During semester breaks, Bill often led study-abroad experiences in the Greco-Roman and Italy programs, imparting an appreciation of Italy, Greece and Turkey, their art, people and cultures and the chemistry of restoration.

Bill’s second career was as a pharmacist who took skillful and compassionate care of thousands of Twin Cities patients at Schneider’s Drug and Cub Pharmacies. He was an anchor of St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill historic neighborhood where he restored a Summit Avenue mansion which successive waves of residents called home. He was a founder and Commissioner of the Twin Cities Gay Softball League for many years. He served as Commissioner of the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Association (NAGAAA) which elected him to its Hall of Fame. As a long-time member of the Church St. Stanislaus in downtown St. Paul, Bill was a St. Stan’s choir member known to all.

An Oblate of St. John’s Abbey, Bill was a faithful member of the community and a volunteer who was creating a necrology of Oblate members. A passionate family genealogist, Bill conducted extensive original research in Ireland and the United States and ignited a network of Lynch and Muldoon family connections that would otherwise have been lost. Many family members on both sides of the Atlantic have received a telephone call and a visit from Bill, encouraging them to recall and share their childhoods and family stories.
